What’s the best way to determine your skin type?

SKIN TYPE It is genetically and ethnically determined –  you are born with your skin type. While conditions do not change,  many other factors can contribute towards it. At Murad, we identify SKIN TYPE by asking a series of questions related to the clients cleansing ritual such as how their skin feels after washing, how it may change throughout the day and where they may notice shiny areas of the skin-this indicates the basic skin type of each client.

Use this simple chart to determine your skin type:

How do I know what moisturiser I should use?

Essentially skin type is linked to the correct cleanser and moisturiser. So in simple terms it depends on what skin type you have. Other factors can influence a recommendation such as, open pores, make up application, etc. We like to ask questions to identify the best regimen of care. Typically, we would suggest the following:

DRY SKIN: The resurgence range is recommended for very dry skin. This range helps improve lines and wrinkles, dullness and smooths the skin while also protecting the skin from the environment.

DEHYDRATED SKIN: Age Reform range offers effective 24 hour hydration, with a range dedicated to preventative aging as well as treating signs of aging such as lines and wrinkles and loss if firmness.

OILY SKIN: The blemish range for oily skin that’s prone to breakout, and the ANTI AGING BLEMISH RANGE for over 25s that are still getting breakouts are recommended. Both these ranges help to balance oil and calm breakouts.

COMBINATION SKIN: I recommend the ENVIRONMENTAL SHIELD range for skins experiencing pigmentation issues or dark spots, and dullness.  The AGE REFORM range has solutions designed for dehydrated skin or combination skin, so this can also be used.

What’s your top 3 skincare tips

  1. Wash, Treat and Moisturize Day and Night. Your face needs TLC too! Just like your dentist says to brush in the morning and night, you should also wash your face to rid your skin and pores from the dirt, oil and free radical damage that occurs whether awake or asleep.
  2. Use SPF Every day. Protect your skin and keep your complexion looking its best by using sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection every day to avoid damaging skin.
  3. Nurture Your Skin. Take the time a couple times a week to nurture your skin with a mask or peel. Look for one that has plenty of antioxidants to combat free radicals. This is a great way to maintain the skin’s health in between facial treatments and boost your weekly skincare routine.

What’s your top advise for helping reduce acne scars

To combat acne scars, look for products that contain Vitamin A, which normalizes the production and life cycle of skin cells. Skin prone to acne has an overproduction of cells in the stratum corneum, which is the outermost layer of the skin and is composed of biologically “dead” cells. These excess dead cells combine with sebum (the skin’s own natural oil) forms comedones, resulting in the pore plugs that are the defining element of acne.

What changes can I make now to get glowing skin

There are four ways to achieve glowing skin via our Connected Beauty Philosophy. At Murad, we believe Skincare is Healthcare, we call it Connected Beauty. Here’s how it works:

TREAT YOUR SKIN

I recommend making your morning and evening skincare routine a “healthy habit”. The first step to healthy glowing skin is to always ensure you give your skin the best care.

  • CLEANSE with the appropriate cleanser for your skin type.
  • TREAT your skin with appropriate skincare related to concerns such as aging, blemishes or pores.
  • HYDRATE with a formula with broad spectrum protection for day and effective hydration for night to allow the skin to repair from the environments harsh aggressors.

EAT YOUR WATER

Glowing skin can only be partially cared for externally with topical products, hydration must also come from within. While we know drinking, water is good for us, it doesn’t help to hydrate the skin since waters key function is to detoxify, therefore it doesn’t take long for the water we drink to lead to a trip to the bathroom!

I recommend we EAT OUR WATER by eating water rich foods packed with nutrients, vitamins and essential amino acids to fortify and strengthen our cells from within to keep us healthy and make our skin glow. Foods can also help our skin to improve due to their nutrients and amino acids.

Incorporate the following foods into your diet to get glowing skin:

AWAKEN YOUR BODY

Exercise has a unique benefit to glowing skin, the exercise we choose should be enjoyable and fun, so we don’t have to be gym bunnies to get that glow. Walking, cycling whatever we have a passion for is perfectly fine. Also, dancing not only burns calories but boosts circulation and increases endorphins-all good for a healthy glowing happier you.

BE KIND TO YOUR MIND

Healthy glowing skin is also very much linked to our lifestyles. Sleep is critical in repairing our skin from the day, and repairing our cells, so having the right environment for sleep is important too. Keep your work life out of the bedroom-laptops, phones, and even your TV can disrupt your circadian rhythm.

What’s your no1 industry skincare secret

Hydration is the most important step for youthful skin. The main path to aging is cellular dehydration which can be seen in our skin through key signs of aging such as dryness, lines and wrinkles, dullness and rough texture. By “eating your water” and using the right products to “nourish your skin” skin will certainly glow!

Skincare is healthcare-and if we understand that everything we do is connected we have a better chance of keeping ourselves happier and healthier and this reflects in our skins health. Living the Connected Beauty lifestyle means that we can have radiant glowing skin at any age.
